Collators

⚠️

Typically, a parachain takes node stability more seriously, because collator sets are relatively small compared to validator sets in sovereign networks. A collator node may face penalties against its stake for being offline for extended period of time.

In the Polkadot ecosystem, it’s quite common that a blockchain developer may launch multiple networks using the same protocol. For example, Crust Network has launched 3 blockchains—Crust, Crust Shadow, and Crust Parachain—all using the same decentralized storage protocol.

A collator, as the name suggests, collects and executes transactions from a specific parachain, then provides unseal blocks together with state transition proofs to the relay chain validators.

In order to do that, a collator needs to retain both a full node of the parachain and a full node of the relay chain for all the necessary information required to produce candidates.
